Wigry National Park is located in the north-east part of Poland, in Podlaskie Voivodeship. Its northern part lies within the East Suwalki Lakeland, while the southern part within the Augustow Plain. The Park was established in 1989 over an area of 14,956 ha. Currently, its area is 15,086 ha and includes 9,464 ha of forests, 2,908 ha of waters, and 2,714 ha of other, mostly agricultural land (2,229 ha). 623 ha, in which 120 ha of forests, are strictly protected.
Nature protection: protection of natural processes (on the areas under strict protection), management of forests (e.g. restoration of natural species composition in tree-stands, shaping age structure, fire-protection measures, fighting biological threats, game control etc.), lakes (biomanipulation, fish stocking and fishery catches, reintroduction of species), peat bogs (e.g. active protection of rare species, protection of plant associations), and biodiversity of agricultural areas (e.g. restoration of traditional breeds of farm animals, old varieties of cultivated plans – apple trees, and others)
Scientific research and monitoring: the park has its own scientific staff, conducting research work on insects, plants, amphibians, and other groups of organisms, as well as running Wigry Station of Integrated Monitoring of Natural Environment (part of national monitoring program)
Environmental and cultural education: preparation of the park for visitors, exhibitions, out-door classes, “green schools”, guided tours, workshops (on ecology, cultural heritage, traditional handicrafts, and others), publications, mass events (like The Earth’s day, Clean up the World), Internet (www.wigry.win.pl), contests, and many others
