Sustainability

Cyprus does not have a National Sustainable Development Strategy. The only existing document is a report entitled: “Report on some priority issues concerning sustainable development and the environment in Cyprus”, published in December 2001 in preparation of the Johannesburg summit. Two documents have a central place in this report: the first one is the Action Plan for the Protection of the Environment (EAP). It was adopted in 1996, and is the formal environmental policy document of the Government. Its main aim is to integrate environmental concerns into other sectors. In 2000 the Plan was reformulated and expanded to become the National Programme for the Adoption of the Environmental Acquis Communautaire of the EU (NEP). The second important set of policy reports that incorporate the major SD goals for Cyprus are the Strategic Development Plans (SDP) for 1994-1998, 1999-2003 and 2004-2006.
The report lists a number of selected priority themes and sectors:

  • Protecting and promoting human health
  • Gender equality and women’s advancement
  • Industry
  • Energy
  • Tourism
  • Agricultural development
  • Fisheries
  • Forestry
  • Promote a balanced regional and rural development
