Sustainability

In 1999, Luxemburg adopted its first National Plan for Sustainable Development. In the absence of a legal basis, the objectives of the plan are not legally binding. Rather, they should be seen as guidelines for policy making to enhance progress towards SD. The plan distinguishes between predominantly social, economic and environmental themes:

  • Environmental themes: biodiversity, forestry, land use change, water, climate change and waste
  • Economic measures in terms of eco-efficiency, and detailed sectoral actions for industry, agriculture, energy and transport.
  • Social dimension: ageing population, unemployment, gender equity, education and public health.

Environmental protection expenditure in the public sector: 0.7 % of GDP, i.e. 257 € per capita.
