Sustainability

The strategy “Poland 2025 – Long-term strategy for sustainable development” was adopted by the Council of Ministers in July 2000. The overall objective of the strategy is to “ensure the growth of welfare of the Polish families”. It focuses on closing the wealth gap with the EU but takes other dimensions of quality of life, such as a clean and natural environment and the preservation of Poland’s
cultural heritage into account. The Polish SDS structures the operational objectives into three categories:

  • Society: education and training systems, science and research, human resources, health service, housing, public order.
  • Economy: innovation, the development of services, modernisation of agriculture and rural areas, foreign trade, SMEs, technical infrastructure.
  • The State: spatial structure/regional development, environmental protection, integration with the EU.

This strategy will be implemented by the central government, but at the same time relevant ministries or local authorities will be in charge of sectoral policies.
Environmental protection expenditure in the public sector: 0.5 % of GDP, i.e. 25 € per capita.
Government expenditure on environment protection, in % of GDP: 0.6%.
