Sustainability

The National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) was adopted by the Slovak Government in October 2001 and in April 2002 by the Slovak Parliament. It is based on a complex analysis of the current state of the Slovak society. Based on this analysis, long-term priorities for sustainable development were defined :

  • Developed democratic country
  • Modern state and system of public administration
  • Highly-developed civic society and quality of life
  • Social solidarity and social protection
  • Balanced territorial development
  • High quality of human health and social resources
  • New model of economy
  • High quality of the environment, protection and rational use of natural resources
  • Assurance of life and safety for citizens, existence and functioning of the state
  • Application of fundamental interests of the Slovak Republic

The Slovak SDS then addresses 28 strategic objectives to fulfil the priorities listed above.
The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for the overall implementation of the strategy. However, each Ministry is also in charge of the implementation of his field’s measures.
Environmental protection expenditure in the public sector: 0.2 % of GDP, i.e. 9 € per capita.
Government expenditure on environment protection, in % of GDP: 0.5%.
