Latvia is divided in 5 regions. Balvi district belongs to the Latgale region, situated in the Northeastern part of Latvia. Balvi District has therefore a border with Russia in the East. Balvi District consists in 19 local municipalities and 2 towns. Town Balvi is the centre of the district. The 28281 inhabitants are concentrated in the administrative centres of local municipalities. Different nationalities are present in the district, mainly Latvians (77,8 %), but also Russians (18,4 %). The land is used as follows: 42,5 % is forest, and 39 % is used for agriculture.Established in 2003, the Balvi District Partnership is an original cooperation aiming at promoting the development of the area. The partnership is composed of representatives from municipalities, non-governmental organizations and entrepreneurs.
