Presentation

Founded in 1973 under the official title "Federation of Nature and National Parks of Europe", EUROPARC is the umbrella organisation of Europe's protected areas. It unites national parks, regional parks, nature parks and biosphere reserves in 38 countries, with the common aim of protecting Europe's unique variety of wildlife, habitats and landscapes. Altogether, EUROPARC Federation has over 370 member organisations, responsible for the management of more than 400 protected areas across the continent. EUROPARC provides them with a forum to share professional experience, collaborate on technical projects and progress common aims.

Apart form individual protected areas, EUROPARC's member organisations also include government ministries and agencies responsible for protected areas at national and regional levels, as well as independent conservation organisations and academic institutions concerned with protected area issues.

To foster a sense of common purpose across the protected area network in Europe

To support protected areas in improving their management

To raise public awareness on the aims and work of protected areas

To facilitate the establishment of new protected areas

To raise the profile of protected areas as a vital means of safeguarding many of the continent's most valuable natural heritage assets, and thereby to increase support for their future protection

To influence the future development of public policies and programmes, especially with the European Union, to the benefit of protected areas' objectives
